Where did my Chianti come from?

January 14, 2008

A glass of Chianti has lots to say…. so listen up. Chianti is an area within the province of Tuscany in Italy. Originally Chianti was a small area situated between the cities of Florence and Siena but in 1932 the Chianti area was expanded to create 8 sub areas: Classico, Colli Aretini, Colli Fiorentini, Colline Pisane, Colli Senesi, Montalbano, Montespertoli and Rufina. Only wines made in the Chianti area can carry the name Chianti. In addition, only wines created in the Classico area (which is an expansion of the original Chianti area prior to 1932) can label their wines as Chianti Classico. Chainti is mostly made from the Sangiovese grape. Sangiovese is also used to make other wines such as Brunello di Montalcino, Rosso di Montalcino and Sangiovese di Romagna among others.
